Plein air paintings are made on location (en plein aire). Most plein air paintings are an attempt by the artist to capture the effect of light and atmosphere on the subject - effects that photographs do not record well. Many are completed on location; others, due to changes in light or weather, are completed after returning to the studio. Plein air paintings tend to be more spontaneous in appearance than studio paintings. They are a challenge and joy to produce.
